What is a housekeeper?
A housekeeper is a domestic employee responsible for maintaining a clean, organized household or estate. Depending on the size of the home and the needs of the homeowner, a housekeeper may either be a live-in, live-out, part-time or full-time staff member. Often times, a housekeeper may also have additional non-related housekeeping responsibilities, such as cooking, occasional babysitting, and personal assistant duties. Again, depending on the needs of the employer, a housekeeper’s responsibilities may include:
A housekeeper may not necessarily have formal training. A typical work week for a housekeeper be as little as 15 hours per week to as much as 55 hours per week, depending on the size of the home. A housekeepers salary will range anywhere from $13.00 to $20 per hour, plus benefits and paid time off. Such compensation is in addition to the living accommodations for live-in housekeepers.
- Mopping, sweeping and vacuuming all floor surfaces
- Window cleaning (interior and exterior)
- Cleaning and putting away laundry
- Fixing beds, changing linens and organizing bedrooms
- Pressing or ironing all linens and some clothing
- Dusting all surfaces and belongings in the home
- Grocery shopping and cooking meals or assistance with dinner prep (peeling and chopping vegetables, etc.)
- Assist with the set up, cooking, serving and clean up for special events
- Watering plants and house sitting while employer is away
- Pet care
- Putting the trash out
- Maintenance of china, silver, antiques and other valuables
- Running errands when needed (drug store, dry cleaners, gift shopping)
Our housekeeper’s are required to have a minimum of 4 years experience in a private home. Additional requirements can be found here.
