Newborn Care Specialist

(aka Baby Nurse)

What is a Newborn Care Specialist?

A newborn care specialist (aka baby nurse) is a professional with extensive newborn experience who comes to your home to assist you, soon after the birth of your child, usually upon your return home from the hospital. A Newborn Specialist is not required to be a Registered Nurse, but often has extensive training and hands on experience with infant care.

Most families in Los Angeles choosing to hire a Newborn Care Specialist are often first-time parents expecting singletons and/or multiples, pregnant moms who have had a C-Section and are unable to carry their newborn for the few weeks, parents of a newborn that require additional support due to their work schedules, parents without any family or support nearby, or parents who simply want to get a good nights sleep.

A Newborn Specialist can be a former nanny but is more importantly someone who has undergone special training with how to care for newborns and/or premature babies, including both singletons and multiples. An experienced newborn care specialist should have certifications such as lactation consulting, sleep training, prenatal parenting, newborn specialist, CPR/First Aid, postpartum doula certifications, etc. Not all newborn care specialists have experience working with multiples, so it is important to remember to ask specific questions relating to your situation when conducting interviews.

A newborn specialist's primary focus is to assist the family with all newborn/infant related care, while providing support and guidance to all members of the household. Additional responsibilities would include:

  • Breastfeeding/lactation support
  • Prenatal/postnatal care
  • Nighttime feedings
  • Promoting healthy feeding habits
  • Establishing healthy Sleep Routines (when developmentally appropriate)
  • Burping techniques
  • Care for singletons, twins, triplets, etc.
  • Bathing the newborn/infant
  • Dressing the newborn/infant
  • Sterilization of bottles, pacifiers and other nursery items
  • Maintaining a clean, sanitized nursery
  • Umbilical cord and circumcision care
  • Baby laundry
  • Administering medicine, if needed
  • General education and support fo parents with regards to infant care
A newborn care specialist usually works anywhere from 8hr to 24hr shifts, 1-7 days per week and the duration of the job can last anywhere from 1 weeks to well over 3 months. Depending on their experience and qualifications, their salary can range anywhere from $25 - $40 per hour for singletons and $35+ for multiples.

It is recommended to book your baby nurse a minimum of 2-3 months in advance (or as soon as possible) as the highly experienced newborn specialists tend to book well into the future.

Our newborn care referrals are required to have a minimum of 6 years relevant work experience to work with infants and hold a minimum of three certifications. Additional requirements can be found here.
